Referring to the motto of the Katholikentag, the Pope noted how God has “breathed his breath of life into humanity,” and in Jesus this “sharing of life” of God reaches its “unsurpassable apex” as “he shares our earthly life to enable us to participate in his divine life.”

We are also called to follow Jesus’ example in caring for the poor and suffering, as we are today close to the people of Ukraine and all those who are threatened by violence, the Pope pointed out, calling on us all to implore God’s peace on all people.

In a “Litany of Lamentation,” the women—all in positions of ecclesiastic authority—expressed grief that the sins of patriarchy and sexism continue to distort the world. 

“We lament the suffering of women and girls perpetrated under the oppressive system of patriarchy upheld by religion and culture,” their lamentation reads. “Where is there justice today for women who daily live in fear that they are at risk of being raped by those they trust?”

Pope Francis said he is saddened to learn of the tragic loss of life and destruction caused by the tornado which struck the Gaylord community in recent days.

In a telegram addressed to Bishop Jeffrey J. Walsh of Gaylord, a city of about 4,200 people west of Detroit in the US State of Michigan, the Pope expressed heartfelt solidarity with all affected by this natural disaster.

Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca opened the discussion by reflecting on the importance of nurturing a world that is habitable for future generations. “By joining this webinar, you are sending a strong signal of hope to all,” he said. “By joining this initiative, you are using your influence to accelerate the most powerful actions for climate solutions.” 

Prof. Dr Iyad Moghli, director, UN Environment Programme and Faith4Earth, noted that the joint appeal comes at a critical moment. “It is the responsibly of everyone to curb the impact of these global challenges and strive for sustainable ways of living to protect food, people and planet,” he said. “Science is clear about climate change.”

Archbishop Thabo Makgoba has urged people to pray for peace on Ascension Day, and has issued a special prayer for parishes and Dioceses to use.

Preaching at a memorial service for the Revd Siyabulela Gidi, who died suddenly in Cape Town recently, he appealed to everyone “to give peace a chance wherever we are and in whatever we do.”
