Condolences for legendary gospel artist, Dr Deborah Fraser

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture has extended sincere condolences to the family friends, colleagues and fans of legendary gospel artist, Dr Deborah Fraser.

Fraser passed away on Sunday due to an illness.

She was a renowned gospel artist who began her illustrious career in 1985 as a back-up vocalist for local and international artists such as Hugh Masekela, Jonas Gwangwa, Lucky Dube and Brenda Fassie, to name a few.

Gospel-sensation Zahara tops iTunes charts

According to Briefly, Bulelwa Mkutukana, also known as Zahara, is a celebrated South African songwriter and singer. Her debut album, Loliwe,was released in 2011, and it went platinum. In 2015, Zahara released her third album, Country Girl, and it was certified triple platinum. 

Her fifth and most recent album, Nqaba Yam, topped the charts on iTunes.

She is also a multi-award-winning artist with an astonishing 17 SAMA awards to her name. Her most loved songs include Loliwe, Phendula and Ndiza.

Gospel singer Rebecca Malope bestowed on the National Orders

President Cyril Ramaphosa bestowed National Orders on Thursday, the highest awards South Africa bestows on its citizens who have contributed to improving the lives of South Africans.

Ramaphosa said: “The Order in IKHAMANGA recognizes Ms Malope for her distinguished contribution to South African music; her unique voice brings joy and comfort to many through meaningful gospel music.”

Gospel artist of the Week: Winnie Mashaba

As a multi-award-winning South African Gospel music artist and TV presenter, Winnie Mashaba is a woman with a humble background.

According to Briefly, Winnie’s debut album, Exodus 20, was released in 2000, bringing her into the public eye. The record went on to sell 25,000 copies and reached gold status.
