Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Minister, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, has gazetted a further extension of the National State of Disaster on COVID-19, until 15 March 2022.
The Ministry on Monday said the extension followed a special Cabinet meeting to determine the extent to which the management of the COVID-19 pandemic still requires the existence of the National State of Disaster and the legal framework to manage the virus outside the Disaster Management Act.
“This will allow government to establish alternative measures to detect and contain further outbreaks,” CoGTA said in a statement.
Under the current regulations, nearly all economic and social restrictions have been lifted, and civil liberties are unrestricted.

Pope Francis’ call to pray for peace came a day after US President Joe Biden warned his Russian counterpart that invading Ukraine would cause “widespread human suffering.”
The White House said Biden also told Russian President Putin that the West was still committed to diplomacy to end the crisis.
But President Biden stressed that Western allies were, in his words, “equally prepared for other scenarios.”
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken explained that those scenarios could include sanctions and military action in Eastern Europe.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has welcomed the oversight visit by the World Health Organisation as an opportunity to profile the depth of intellectual and technological capacity on the African continent, and the integrity with which, intellectual property is being leveraged to enable vaccine production on the continent.
The President met with World Health Organisation (WHO) Director-General, Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus,in Cape Town on Friday, to discuss progress in making Africa self-sufficient in the production of COVID-19 vaccines and related treatments.
Dr Ghebreyesus and the Belgian Minister of Development Cooperation Meryame Kitir visited the country on a two-day visit to various vaccine-related sites around Cape Town, hosted by the Department of Science and Innovation, the Department of Health and other partners.
The two-day visit served to showcase South Africa’s capacity and infrastructure in the development of vaccines for current and potentially new strains of COVID-19, and to highlight how manufacturing in South Africa is a critical contribution to the continent’s response to COVID-19.

“The theme announces the love of God in Christ for all creation,” he said. “It speaks to the heart of our faith and the reason for our fellowship. It inspires our common calling to walk, pray and work together for justice and peace – for reconciliation and unity – for renewal and healing.”

World Health Organisation (WHO) Africa Regional director, Dr Matshidiso Moeti, says the continent is on course to controlling the COVID-19 pandemic.
She was speaking as the continent is about to observe two years since the first case of COVID-19 was identified on 14 February.
Since then, at least 11 million cases and 242 000 deaths as a result of the virus have been recorded in Africa.
“If the current trends hold, there is light at the end of the tunnel. As long as we remain vigilant and act intensively, particularly on vaccinations, the continent is on track for controlling the pandemic,” she said.
Moeti reflected that the past two years have been “extremely difficult” for the continent.

BMN: Give us a glimpse into your life by describing one thing on your To-Do List for this week, which is giving you energy.
Carel-J Rischmuller: Preparing and proclaiming the Word of God is on my to-do list every day. There is nothing like spending time with God in the Word and then taking the gems you found to the people to apply to our lives. The Spirit working through the Word is the power that changes lives.
BMN: Is there a story you tell people when they ask: What gives you hope for South Africa?
Carel-J Rischmuller: My hope is not for South Africa, but I hope that God will protect and provide for his children in South Africa. We won’t fix South Africa. Jesus will return one day to change the world. In the meantime, we are ambassadors sent into this broken land. We are sent to earth to care about other people, to love one another, to lead people to Christ, to feed the hungry, to comfort the broken, and to proclaim the good news of God.
BMN: What was the last thing that surprised you?
Carel-J Rischmuller: I’m continually surprised how seemingly intelligent people believe rubbish sent to them via Facebook and Whatsapp
BMN: What have you learnt about how Christians can make an impact on society?
Carel-J Rischmuller: Christians make an impact by caring for and loving those that God placed on your path. Thinking about society is (for most people) too big a concept. It becomes overwhelming. Do what you can do with the power of Spirit where God placed you.
BMN: Is there a piece of Scripture that you often go back to find inspiration?
Carel-J Rischmuller: Many. The first one that comes to mind, especially in working with teenagers, is:1 John 4:4 “…for He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

Millions of South Africans who benefited from the R350 COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress Grant can breathe a sigh of relief as government has extended it for a further year until March 2023.
Delivering his State of the Nation Address on Thursday evening, the President highlighted that since the onset of COVID-19, the Social Relief of Distress Grant has provided support to more than 10 million unemployed people who were most vulnerable to the impact of the pandemic.
“Mindful of the proven benefits of the grant, we will extend the R350 SRD Grant for one further year, to the end of March 2023,” the President said.

Ms Qumba is a 17 year old Grade 11 leaner from Gibson Pillay Learning Academy in Lenasia, Johannesburg.
She met with the President today to contribute to President's speech which he will deliver during the State of the Nation Address scheduled for 13 February 2020 at a joint sitting in Parliament.
The learner made inputs to President's speech on various issues amongst others including free education, safety at educational institutions and employment in the country.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Thursday that government plans to scrap the National State of Disaster as the country enters a new phase in the management of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It is our intention to end the National State of Disaster as soon as we have finalised other measures under the National Health Act and other legislation to contain the pandemic,” said the President on Thursday.
On 15 March 2020, President Ramaphosa declared the National State of Disaster in terms of the Disaster Management Act and announced a range of measures to contain the COVID-19 outbreak.
Speaking during the televised 2022 State of the Nation Address (SONA) from the Cape Town City Hall, the First Citizen said nearly all restrictions on economic and social activity have already been lifted, which is largely thanks to the vaccination rollout programme.
Citing the latest data, he said South Africa has administered over 30 million COVID-19 vaccine doses, while nearly 42% of all adults and 16% of everyone over the age of 50 is fully jabbed.
“This is the real achievement that many countries on our continent have not been able to reach.”
He reminded citizens that vaccines are the best defence against illness, death and COVID-19, which has claimed close to 100 000 lives locally.
“I’ve always said from a personal point of view, had I have not been vaccinated in December when I contracted COVID-19, I probably will not be standing here,” he reflected.
The President took the time to urge South Africans to take the life-saving jab and continue to observe basic health measures and remain vigilant.
“We will be able to get on with our lives, even with the virus in our midst,” he said, adding that the pandemic has exacerbated the divide between those who are employed and those who are jobless.
Solidarity Fund
President Ramaphosa announced that the Solidarity Fund has raised R3.4 billion from more than 300 000 South Africans and companies, while more than 400 individuals and 100 companies volunteered their time and services.
“The fund has played a pivotal role in supporting the national health response and alleviating the humanitarian crisis that confronted our country and our people.”
He thanked everyone who contributed to the fund, including some Members of Parliament and other initiatives to support those affected by the pandemic.
The President also paid tribute to the many healthcare and frontline workers who play a key role in the fight against Coronavirus.
“The nation owes a great debt of gratitude to the dedicated health workers and to other frontline staff who put their own health and lives at risk to care for the ill and the vulnerable during this period,” he said. – SAnews.gov.za
