Q&A with Pastor Carel-J Rischmuller from Still Bay

Bible Media News (BMN) speaks to Pastor Rischmuller from the Still Bay Baptist Church about proclaiming the Word of God and feeding the hungry.

BMN: Give us a glimpse into your life by describing one thing on your To-Do List for this week, which is giving you energy.

Carel-J Rischmuller: Preparing and proclaiming the Word of God is on my to-do list every day. There is nothing like spending time with God in the Word and then taking the gems you found to the people to apply to our lives. The Spirit working through the Word is the power that changes lives.

BMN: Is there a story you tell people when they ask: What gives you hope for South Africa?

Carel-J Rischmuller: My hope is not for South Africa, but I hope that God will protect and provide for his children in South Africa. We won’t fix South Africa. Jesus will return one day to change the world. In the meantime, we are ambassadors sent into this broken land. We are sent to earth to care about other people, to love one another, to lead people to Christ, to feed the hungry, to comfort the broken, and to proclaim the good news of God.

BMN: What was the last thing that surprised you?

Carel-J Rischmuller: I’m continually surprised how seemingly intelligent people believe rubbish sent to them via Facebook and Whatsapp

BMN: What have you learnt about how Christians can make an impact on society?

Carel-J Rischmuller: Christians make an impact by caring for and loving those that God placed on your path. Thinking about society is (for most people) too big a concept. It becomes overwhelming. Do what you can do with the power of Spirit where God placed you.

BMN: Is there a piece of Scripture that you often go back to find inspiration?

Carel-J Rischmuller: Many. The first one that comes to mind, especially in working with teenagers, is:1 John 4:4 “…for He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

Pope Francis: “I was sick and you visited me” – SACBC

In a recent statement issued by Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference, it states that The Thirtieth World Day of the Sick is celebrated on 11 February 2022.

In his message for this world day of the sick the Holy Father acknowledged that many advances have been made, yet there is still a long way to go in ensuring that all the sick, also those living in places and situations of great poverty and marginalization, receive the health care they need, as well as the pastoral care that can help them experience their sickness in union with the crucified and risen Christ.

The theme this year is “‘Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful’ (Lk 6:36): Standing beside those who suffer on a path of charity.” Talking about mercy the Pope says we can say with wonder and gratitude that God’s mercy embraces both fatherhood and motherhood (cf. Is 49:15). God cares for us with the strength of a father and the tenderness of a mother; he unceasingly desires to give us new life in the Holy Spirit.

WCC central committee to media: “the pandemic cannot keep us from having an assembly”

We are very hopeful—if not more hopeful than ever—that the assembly will take place in Karlsruhe,” said Dr Agnes Abuom, WCC central committee moderator. “Member churches should prepare their delegations to actually attend.”

WCC acting general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca also expressed his clear commitment to move forward with the assembly. “I would like to assure you the pandemic cannot keep us from having an assembly,” he said. “Churches in Germay, and the government in Germany, are doing their best to assure we have an assembly.”

EXCLUSIVE: Suspect in arson case of St. George’s Cathedral released

After provincial police spokesperson Andrè Traut issued a statement on Monday that a 40-year-old suspect was expected to appear in court on Monday regarding the alleged arson of the lower floor of the St. George’s Cathedral, and the case file was submitted to the Senior Public Prosecutor. But, according to André, a different decision has been made. The suspect was subsequently released while further investigations are underway.

In a statement on Monday, the SAPS said in a statement: “CCTV cameras from a hospitality business in the area captured footage of a possible suspect, who was spotted near the crime scene when detectives investigated the crime scene. He was arrested on a charge of arson and made his court appearance in Cape Town yesterday.”

Hundreds gather in West Bank village to express solidarity in wake of violence

More than 400 people participated in an olive tree planting and solidarity event in the West Bank village of Burin. The gathering, organized by Rabbis for Human Rights, occurred in the wake of an extremist attack two weeks ago on people planting olive trees.

As the solidarity event began, settlers from Givat Ronen attempted to reach the area. However, they were rebuffed by the army, with whom the event was coordinated.

Rabbis for Human Rights executive director Avi Dabush stated: “This picture of hundreds of Israelis, including those injured by the Jewish terrorists, returning to the scene of the attack, two weeks after it occurred, represents a significant victory. We declared that we will not give in to violence and that we would return to the field to stand in solidarity with Palestinian olive farmers against those who regularly attack them.”

SACBC Statement on the Death of Mariatrost Junior Primary School Principal and his wife

“The Catholic Institute of Education is deeply concerned about the increasing violent attacks on schools, principals, teachers and learners,” the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC) said in a statement.

The Catholic Education community mourns the death of the Principal of Mariatrost Junior Primary and his wife who were killed in their home on Saturday. The loss of any life is a tragedy and for the Mariatrost Junior Primary School, the Catholic Education network and the community at St Faiths Mission, the death of our principal and servant of Christ is irreparable.

We welcome the statement from the MEC for Education in KZN and join in the call for those who are responsible to be found so we can begin the journey towards restoring justice.

Exclusive Interview with Chris from The Helping Hand SA Team

Bible Media News reached out to Chris from the The Helping Hand team.

Helping Hand SA aims to provide assistance, whether physical, emotional, or otherwise, to those in need, regardless of race, creed, or social status. Their passion is to change the world through empowering people to develop a personal relationship with God, and in turn, to change their part of the world.

Making the World a Better Place: Sharing the message of God’s love for humankind.

You can read our interview with Chris below:

Give us a glimpse into your life by describing one thing on your To Do List for this week, that is giving you energy.

This week, as part of our school supplies initiative, I am preparing a short talk on education, self-worth, and God’s personal care for the older children in my Sunday School class. (about 25 kids, ages 8-14, class held weekly in Morningstar informal settlement) I am really excited to be able to share with them this message, as well as equip them with some much needed school materials.

Is there a story you tell people when they ask: What gives you hope for South Africa?

Oh well, there’s a few! One that stands out is of dear “Mama” Rosie who founded a centre in Khayelitsha settlement completely on her own. Wanting to help destitute, abandoned, or orphaned children around her, she began taking them into her own home. Then she got some other ladies from the community involved. She created a “hole in the wall” where mothers tempted to abandon their babies could rather leave them, and Mama Rosie would then take them in. She cared for, educated, prayed with, and encouraged these little ones faithfully. In the midst of so much sadness and struggle, she persevered, and today she has expanded to over 200 children in an orphanage and creche, plus a youth centre/agricultural project, small bakery to employ local women, frail care centre, AND a feeding scheme in Khayelitsha. And though she still struggles to make ends meet, she never gives up. One person who won’t quit and holds on to Jesus can achieve anything – for a little candle like her shines all the brighter in a area of great darkness.  I am so honoured that we can regularly assist her with food and other items, and find her a prime example of hope in our country.

What was the last thing that surprised you?

Going to collect a donation of “some meat” from a local butchery and ending up loading TWO vanloads of over 1600 kgs total; then delivering to soup kitchens and feeding schemes same day! I’m still mind boggled by it! Praise God.
Also, seeing a huge turtle with a dragonfly just resting on his back while out for a hike yesterday morning. Incredible.

What have you learnt about how Christians can make an impact in society?

In my life I’ve learned a lot about faithfulness in the little things – the seemingly mundane. I deeply believe in long term “sticking” to whatever God has called one to, and that through our samples of Jesus, we can change firstly OUR world; the people around us, and thus, our society at large. Also, I have learned not to be burdened with the vast physical and spiritual need, but rather focus on the things that are good, amplify them, and keep plodding on to uplift individual’s hearts and minds. To help where I can, and even if I can’t do anything materially, a smile and a “Jesus loves you!” works wonders to show what I believe.

Like the man walking on the seashore and calmly tossing stranded starfish back into the water, when asked “what’s the point, there are so many, you can’t possibly make a real difference!” he smiled and replied while placing one more into the surf “well, it made a difference to THAT one!”

That’s my goal as a Christian in society, to make a difference to whoever the Lord brings across my path. And that is how we at Helping Hand operate.

What is God up to in your life?

I’m so thrilled to be able over the last several months to help mentor two young men who have a real desire to be forces for good and for God. We’ve been having lengthy discussions on all manner of down-to-earth topics, and it is so special to see them grow in faith and strength – so much so that they are reaching out to others themselves! Also, my wife and I are expecting our third child this year!

I hope this helps and is clear enough! Please let me know if you would like a “call to action” writeup on our School project… thanks!
