Across the world, churches work to end child abuse

As one straightforward workshop participant put it: “It’s our responsibility to protect the rights and dignity of our children.”

Out of the Shadows workshops were held in parts of Asia, the Caribbean, and Africa, with the goal of training church leaders so they can train others. The “ripple effect” is already in evidence.

For example, in Nigeria alone, almost 200 leaders from church-run schools participated in the most recent workshop led by the Christian Council of Nigeria.

Calls for Cape Town International Airport to be renamed

Cape Town International Airport must be renamed Desmond Mpilo Tutu International Airport.

That was the call from the Archbishop of Cape Town, Thabo Makgoba, speaking during a ceremony at the St. George’s Cathedral on Sunday in which the renowned anti-apartheid activist’s ashes were interred.

The proposal came after Makgoba called on South Africans to live simply, like Tutu did, to help end inequality.

SA records 11 106 new COVID-19 cases and 110 deaths

South Africa recorded 11 106 new COVID-19 cases and 110 deaths, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said on Wednesday.

This means the country now has 3 494 696 confirmed infections and 91 561 fatalities since the start of the pandemic.

According to the latest data, KwaZulu-Natal continues to report the highest number of infections after 2 863 people tested positive in the last 24 hours.

#COVID19 UPDATE: A total of 49,970 tests were conducted in the last 24hrs, with 11,106 new cases, representing a 22.2% positivity rate. The year often begins with making firm resolutions, taken with earnestness and commitment.

The following weeks and months are familiarly littered with broken promises and failures. Successful and consistent adherence to new years’ resolutions is, from my experience, rare.

To change this pattern of failure, I look to the holy scripture for help.

The Archbishop Tutu passed away on Sunday, 26 December 2021, at the age of 90.
